Winter in San Antonio is a wonderful time of year. The weather is cooler of course, but not so cold you have to bundle up to enjoy all of the fun winter activities in and around the city.
Be sure to put some of these at the top of your list just a short drive from your beautiful Sitterle Homes garden house.
If you’ve never visited the Riverwalk during the holidays, make it a must for this year. Illuminated with more than 100,000 plus lights, the Riverwalk turns into a magical experience. And before Christmas, you can find Santa and his elves to take a picture with you. Another wonderful place to see illuminated during the winter season is the San Antonio Zoo. Head over for Zoo Lights, December – January 1 and immerse yourself in the wild colors, exotic decorations and intricate animal patterns twinkling in the night. December – January 8 marks the Holiday Magic Festival of Lights, the first-ever Chinese lantern festival in San Antonio. Take your family to enjoy an East Meets West cultural festival with mesmerizing lanterns and beautiful displays.
The surrounding theme parks also come to life this time of year with lights, rides, and shows, all celebrating the season, including SeaWorld, Six Flags and Morgan’s Wonderland. December – January 1, SeaWorld hosts a Christmas Celebration with Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and a winter wonderland, lighting up Texas with the largest lighted Christmas display in the state. December – January 2, Six Flags hosts Holiday in the Park with over a million dazzling lights, shows, music, and illuminations. Through December 23 – A Wonderland Christmas, offers sparkling lights, carolers and Santa Claus at Morgan’s Wonderland.
Ring in the New Year at the biggest free New Year’s Eve celebration and fireworks extravaganza in Texas at Celebrate San Antonio! The family-friendly event includes live music on three stages, carnival games and rides and delicious festival food, this downtown fiesta is the place to celebrate the New Year. Festivities begin at 5pm.
For those looking for a more low-key winter activity head to the San Antonio Botanical Gardens for the Holidays in Bloom for beautiful poinsettias, a giant Christmas Tree, wreaths and red bows throughout the gardens. Be sure to visit the Art Park as well, and January 14-16 bring your furry friend for Dog Days and pet giveaways.
