Summer in Texas is intense for months; 97 degrees is a great norm. If it’s 150 degrees in the attic and it’s 72 degrees inside the home, the HVAC unit will work harder, come on more often and wear out sooner. It’s a 78 degree difference between the two environments.

With the addition of radiant barrier to the attic, some heat is reflected off the roof and lowers the attic temperature down to 120 degrees. The math remains, though, that it’s a 120 degrees in the attic and 72 inside the home. The HVAC unit is still working hard within a 48 degree difference.

Seal up that attic and add a regulated fresh duct instead of attic vents! The attic will now hold a temperature of 77 degrees with a home temperature of 72 degrees. This 5 degree difference and cooler temperature in the attic allows the HVAC unit to be used less. By being operated in a less stressful environment, the HVAC will last longer and save energy for the homeowner.
